We are the only company that donates bronze statues and bullion to non profit events, and we split the revenue 50/50 which acts as the anchor of the business. The company is growing to 600 auctions a month and to date has donated tens of millions to charity while still creating a livelihood. “</p>

<p> Marty and Michele are an unlikely duo.  Marty has lived all over the world including Bangladesh, the UK and the US.  Fifteen years ago, Marty was a studying computer information systems at Florida Atlantic University.  He delivered pizzas.  The driver’s side door of his car always jammed.  That didn’t make delivering the pizzas any easier.  Fifteen years ago, Michele was working and living in the Boston area.  She had a successful career in accounting and her husband had a career in finance.  She’d always lived in the northeast and ordered a lot of delivery pizza when the weather was too cold or snowy.  </p>

<p>Fast forward to 2005.  Michele and her husband had moved to South Florida to enjoy the gorgeous weather.  Marty had graduated from college and was still living in the South Florida.  Their paths crossed when they both worked at a start-up technology firm.  The firm was developing a product to serve the investment advisor arena.  Marty was head of technology and Michele worked on the business side.  They ended up working closely together – the technology geek and the stuffy accountant.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>As so often happens these days, both found themselves out of work in 2011 when the technology firm dissolved for a number of reasons.  By then Marty had a two year old daughter and a son on the way.  Michele was trying to figure out what to do next.  Looking for work in this economy is a too familiar problem these days.  Ever since Marty became a parent, he had been thinking about and researching how he was going to raise his kids.  With his background in technology, he looked around for tools that would help.  He couldn’t find anything that quite filled the bill.  He came up with an idea to build something to help him and other families.  In 2011, Marty and Michele met for lunch.  He discussed his idea of developing a tool that parents could use to help them encourage a strong work ethic and good behaviors, teach kids basic budgeting, savings and time management skills, and provide a private way for families to chronicle life events.  He also wanted something that allowed his whole family to see and participate in while keeping it private to the family members he chose– even his sister in Australia.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Soon after, the two collaborated.  FamilyViewed.com was born and has now launched.  Both are in a business together that neither one of them could have ever imagined fifteen years ago or even three years ago.  A few weeks ago, they were at a family fun festival making cotton candy for more than 1,500 kids.  You should have seen Michele.  She had sticky pink stuff all over her. Lesson learned:  Make sure you get a shield when renting a cotton candy machine.  FamilyViewed.com and all that goes with it are a far cry from the stuffy accountant and the technology geek.  In this economy, creativity and innovation rule the day for some.</p>

<p>Trend #2: Crowdfunding for the Environment&#13;<br />
<br />VCs and private equity will finance the large-scale solar projects, but Spellun points out that “many of the micro eco-innovations to get their initial capital through kickstarter.com or a green focused crowdfunding site, a number of which have recently launched, such as greenunite.com. </p>

<p>Trend #3: New Battery Technology&#13;<br />
<br />If electric cars are ever going to hit the mainstream, they are going to have to get more than 100 miles to a charge. IBM is exploring lithium-air technology (rather than the current lithium-ion batteries that power today’s electric vehicles, cell phones and laptops). Lithium-air batteries take oxygen from the air, which then reacts with the lithium in the battery to produce electricity. </p>

<p>Trend #4: Disaster Preparedness Becomes Chic&#13;<br />
<br />Events such as Hurricane Irene will make people prepare for the worst. Smart families will have their survival gear at the ready and will be thinking about how to protect their home from the next natural disaster. <p> Independence Holding Company (NYSE:IHC) today announced the formation a new company, IHC Specialty Benefits, Inc. (IHC Specialty), which will accelerate IHC’s growth into new niche lines of business. </p>

<p>Jeff Smedsrud, chief marketing officer of IHC, will be chief executive officer and president of the new company.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>IHC Specialty will develop new health insurance products and services that are expected to be in greater demand as federal health care reform is implemented. The product lines contemplated for expansion include supplemental and ancillary insurance, such as accident, critical illness and pet insurance. A significant amount of products will be marketed directly to consumers through IHC’s proprietary technology.</p>

<p>Dave Keller, former senior vice president of sales and marketing for IHC Health Solutions, and Brian Dow, former senior vice president of ecommerce and business development for IHC Health Solutions, are joining Smedsrud at IHC Specialty, along with nine other team members. </p>

<p>“We have seasoned executives who are passionate about growing business and capitalizing on market trends. No matter what happens with health care reform, we have entered into a new world of how consumers buy and utilize health-related products. We plan to embrace this new shopping mentality by offering customized products and exchange platforms,” said Smedsrud.</p>

<p>The company is partnering with large payers, accountable care organizations, and distributors—both local and national—to create product and consumer solutions. </p>
